Shoreline, Dover

Population: 730

Distance from Gander: 69km.

Details: The roots of this community date back to the Maritime Archaic, Palaeoeskimo and Beothuck Indians. European settlers arrived in the early 1890s, consisting mainly of people from the island communities of Bonavista Bay. Lured by the potential lumber and fishing resources, they still rely on these industries for a significant part of their economy.

During the resettlement days of the 1950s and ’60s, people from islands in the bay floated their houses to these shores using oil drums for flotation and towing them with boats. A famous Newfoundland picture shows a house being towed into Dover in this fashion.

In 1981, geologists discovered that Dover sits on the start of the North American Fault Line. The Dover Fault is a break in the earth's crust, marking the geological boundary where North America was once connected to Europe, and or North Africa, 410 million years ago.
